10 Free SEO Tools Every Service Business Should Be Using

You don't need a $200/month subscription to start doing serious SEO work on your service business website. Google and other platforms publish some of the most powerful SEO tools ever created — for free. Knowing which ones to use and what to look at in each one can fundamentally change how you understand and improve your search visibility. Here are 10 free SEO tools every service business should be using.

1. Google Search Console

The most important free SEO tool available, period. Google Search Console shows you exactly which keywords your website is currently ranking for, how many impressions and clicks each keyword generates, your average ranking position, and which pages are performing best. It also alerts you to crawl errors, indexing issues, mobile usability problems, and manual penalties. If you have only one SEO tool, make it Google Search Console. Setup requires a Google account and verification of your website, which takes about 30 minutes.

2. Google Business Profile Insights

Available inside your Google Business Profile dashboard, Insights shows you how many times your listing appeared in search results, how many people clicked to call, how many requested directions, and where searches for your business originated geographically. This data is invaluable for understanding your local search performance and is completely separate from website analytics.

3. Google Analytics 4 (GA4)

Google Analytics 4 is free website analytics that tracks visitor traffic sources, behavior on your site, conversion events (form submissions, phone call clicks), and audience demographics. Combined with Search Console, it gives you a complete picture of how search visitors behave once they reach your website. Setup requires adding a tracking code to your site.

4. Google PageSpeed Insights

Available at pagespeed.web.dev, this free tool analyzes your website's load speed and core web vitals scores on both mobile and desktop. It provides a prioritized list of specific technical fixes with estimated performance impact. Since Google uses core web vitals as a ranking signal, improving your score has direct SEO value — and PageSpeed Insights tells you exactly what to fix.

5. Google Rich Results Test

Available at search.google.com/test/rich-results, this tool checks whether your schema markup is correctly implemented and eligible for rich results (star ratings, FAQ entries, HowTo steps) in Google search. If you've added schema to your site and want to verify it's working correctly, this is the tool to use.

6. Screaming Frog SEO Spider (Free Tier)

Screaming Frog is a desktop application that crawls your website like a search engine would, identifying broken links, missing meta tags, duplicate content, redirect chains, and dozens of other technical SEO issues. The free version crawls up to 500 URLs — enough for most service business websites. Download it at screamingfrog.co.uk and run a crawl to see exactly what technical issues your site has.

7. Bing Webmaster Tools

The Bing equivalent of Google Search Console, available free at bing.com/webmasters. It shows keyword performance, crawl data, and indexing status for Bing — which powers Microsoft Copilot's AI responses. Setup takes about 20 minutes and can be simplified by importing your existing Google Search Console data.

8. Answer the Public (Free Tier)

Answer the Public generates visual maps of questions and phrases people search for around any keyword. Enter your core service category and location, and it returns the actual questions your potential customers are asking — which you can then answer with blog posts, FAQs, and service page content. The free tier allows a limited number of searches per day.

9. Google Alerts

Set up Google Alerts for your business name, your competitors' names, and your core service keywords. You'll receive email notifications when new content mentioning these terms is indexed — letting you monitor your online reputation, track competitor activity, and spot new link-building or PR opportunities automatically.

10. Schema Markup Validator (schema.org)

Available at validator.schema.org, this official tool validates any schema markup you've implemented on your website. Paste in your URL or raw schema code and it checks for errors, warnings, and information messages. Valid schema is a prerequisite for rich results and AI citation accuracy.

These 10 tools cost nothing and collectively give you a comprehensive view of your website's technical health, search performance, and optimization opportunities.
